a present for me......

YeS! that is my age as of tomorrow, went to Road to California last week with friends, bought MySeLF a present....... the Emily Munroe Quilt pattern....

an absolutely wonderful folk art quilt c.1865, applique blocks done "kettle quilt" style...... made with coarse wools, twill and cottons....
here's whats inside.....

i love the couching done on and around the appliques......

so i had to also purchase these old spools of wool threads, only $1 each, great find...... had the army blanket green.... perfect for some of the blocks.....
not sure that i will make the quilt in it's entirety but will probably have fun with a smaller version or even frame individual blocks...... possibilities are endless....

Four Knaves Block......

some have asked about the Four Knaves block......i was inspired by an antique quilt, found the block in one of the Around the Block books by Judy Hopkins but the center was a pieced square, which i didn't want.......so i figured up my own math, not exactly precise, of course, but it worked for my style.....

the center square is cut 4"
all the triangles are cut from 2&3/8" squares, cut once diagonally

my block finishes at 5&1/2" and my center square does float within the block, because of my unexact math.......

enjoy cheri.......

the chairs.....

some are "swooning" over my wonderful chairs.....
needed new furniture terribly.....my husband was hinting toward a recliner, i could not see any recliner fitting in with our prim style but then we went to Plummers, saw this one and so many leather color choices......
i wanted regular chairs with an ottoman, picked two different styles and this fabric swatch..... i was so ecstatic as they were being unloaded, more gorgeous than i could have imagined...... i kept saying "oh are these mine!!!!" yes lady they're yours!
so now we both are content and comfortable..... reese too (that's him in his spot on the ottoman every night)
back to knitting, making another bow tie scarf for Lucy's BFF .....

a simply sweet finish......

a simply sweet finish for your four patches......
alternate green squares are cut 3&1/2".....
for setting side triangles cut 5&1/2" squares, cut diagonally twice......
corners are 3" squares, cut diagonally once.....
border as you choose.....

had a few leftover four patch pieces, so i stitched together this homespun one......

and at Christmas time i received a sweet gift from a blog friend Merumo, she is very able, accomplished and clever in many handworks...... i am a very neglectful blog friend, just getting around to sending her a proper thank you...... this little primitive quilt is her thanks for the sweet sewing pouch and clips she made for me and will be on it's way to you soon....... you can visit her blog at http://pleasentreeus.blogspot.com

simply enjoy finishing up your sweet little primitive quilt......

a secret.....

I must admit I have a secret, I don't share with many.....i will & do buy fabrics from Walmart.... I know that's a no no but I love the way the cheap muslin tea dyes, my favorite and when i am in I look at other fun/funky fabrics.....some which turn out to be favorites!
now they must be 100% cotton....i do have some morals!
most/99% of my fabric shopping is at quilt shops but every once in awhile..... I see a fabric that just strikes my fancy and in the basket it goes.....
so Kathie that is why do not recognize that white/black (tea dyed, of course) I used in the sew a long! and they only had one fat quarter which is disappointing as I love it......
feel much better after sharing my long held secret!
here's Lucy helping me pull out a couple other Walmart favorites..... she's saying "ahhhhh" as pulls and checks out each one..... a true quilter in the making.....

baking do's and do nots....

making Carrot and Zucchini Bars with Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting for quilt class tomorrow.....
do check for ingredients on hand....
don't just assume you are stocked with the basics.....
do Google substitutes for forgotten items needed at store....
don't assume everything can be substituted.....
I learned I can substitute corn syrup for honey but there is basically nothing that can substitute for baking soda (which I just assumed was in the cupboard).....
so although I was already in my jammie sweats, had to change and run down to the store for a 50 cent box of baking soda.....uuugghh!
here are the bars fresh out of the oven, cooling before frosting.... hope I remembered the lemon!
they do smell delightful.....
you can find the recipe here to make your own, just make sure to check the pantry first!

a little Lucy.....

this is how clean and adorably dressed Lucy was when I picked her up this morning.....we stopped to buy some needed items from Walmart.....luckily I had also grabbed some inexpensive play clothes for Lucy because after a couple hours at Grammy's she was pretty dirty, although still adorable..... we fed the pig and chickens, then made dirt cakes......

great way to start off the new year.....
